J has decided that she wants to get her ears pierced. Mostly because she wants to own earrings, but is too practical to collect them if she can’t wear them. I suggested she wait a month or two in case her urge for earrings fades away, so she’s made a count down calendar for crossing off the days. Her main concern is that it’s going to be dreadfully painful, so she’s in the process of polling everyone she knows with pierced ears, asking them to tell her, on a scale of one to ten, how excruciating it was. Ever the little scientist, she’s making a bar graph of the results.

Hmmm…. hard to rate. I was 8 when I got mine done and probably if I was asked then to rate it I would have given it a 5. It burned like a big needle, but not for long. Now one of mine is grown over and I doubt I’d ever get it pierced again.
My mom made me wait until I was 12, and really it only hurt for a few seconds. I’d rate it a 6, but a fleeting 6.
Now, childbirth on the other hand… never mind, let’s not scar her!
Thanks you two. More stats for the graph! She’ll be pleased.
I had mine done by my dad nonetheless. He used silver bullets that had to be taken off with a wrench. That was a 10 for sure. First because it was my dad the doctor and second because it just hurt. After that I had them done a few more times, for I never kept them open and it was nothing, maybe a one. I figure if I can pop out four kids with no drugs whatsoever, putting holes in my ears is a big fat 1 or 2. I have since let them close up and have no desire to put the holes back in.
I was going to say something about “after having given birth to four children….”, but then I thought I’d put myself back to my pre-birthing, eight-year-old mind! I see I wasn’t the only one thinking along those lines!
Funny how any mention of pain results in labor flashbacks!
