So far, the film club is going strong.
We’ve watched:
- Blind Spot – an hour and a half long interview with Hitler’s personal secretary. In German, with subtitles.
- Steal this Film II – documentary about copyright laws, technology and ownership of ideas.
- The Corporation – documentary which gives the history of the concept of corporations, the legal rights given to corporations ( did you know that corporations are considered “persons” by law, and as such have the rights given to individuals?) , and provides evidence to show that corporations, if they actually were individuals, would be labeled as sociopathic according to the DSM-IV
- Etre et Avoir (To Be and To Have) – film documenting an example of a “single-class” school as they still exist all over France. Shot in Auvergne, showing one teacher and a multi-age classroom. In French, with subtitles.
The plan now is for R and I to bring a doc each to our sessions, and whichever one we decide looks more interesting, we watch. It’s a golden opportunity! I can open his mind up to any topic I choose!
Any suggestions? Any film that should be mandatory viewing for a teen? Any favorites that you think both of us would enjoy? Any and all ideas welcome!
Zeitgeist (sp?) 1 and 2. Or, just 2, which relates directly to the current economic crisis and the root of its problems in very understandable terms.
Don’t think it’s rentable but you can download it from the Internet. I borrowed it from a friend or would send you a link. It’s a must-see, in my opinion.
how about one of the ‘squatsi movies- kowaanisqatsi, powaqqatsi, naqoyqatsi . really powerful imagery and phillip glass soundtrack , great intro to documentary cinematography.
It’s not a documentary, but a favorite. It’s a foreign film called “Cinema Paradiso” (Italian), and has such a sweet story and beautiful soundtrack as well. My sister and I love this film.
Um. Not really people related, more big corporations and government. Even so, I liked “Who Killed the Electric Car” reminded me of how things can be hidden and supressed with the majority of people even aware. Electric vs. Hydrogen cells made for an interesting comparison. Even the process to get an electric car. Wow.
